Il a \u00e9t\u00e9 inspir\u00e9 par une toile de Viktor Hartmann, architecte et peintre ami du compositeur. Reconnaissant d&rsquo;avoir \u00e9chapp\u00e9 \u00e0 un attentat, pourtant ex\u00e9cut\u00e9 \u00e0 Saint-P\u00e9tersbourg, le tsar Alexandre II avait d\u00e9cid\u00e9 d&rsquo;offrir \u00e0 la ville de Kiew une grande porte. Un concours fut lanc\u00e9, Hartmann s&rsquo;y pr\u00e9senta et le tableau qu&rsquo;il a peint illustre son projet. La grande porte ne sera pas construite. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hartmann meurt en 1873. Une exposition de ses \u0153uvres est organis\u00e9e l&rsquo;ann\u00e9e suivante. Moussorgski y trouve une source d&rsquo;inspiration et une fa\u00e7on de rendre hommage \u00e0 un ami dont la perte l&rsquo;affecte beaucoup.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>La grande porte de Kiev est peut-\u00eatre l&rsquo;un des morceaux les plus connus de la s\u00e9rie des 10. Les cuivres, les percussions, des cloches y r\u00e9sonnent particuli\u00e8rement.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p><em>Le mouvement imagin\u00e9 par Moussorgski peint le tableau color\u00e9 d&rsquo;une solennit\u00e9 populaire et prend des allures de final d&rsquo;op\u00e9ra. L&rsquo;indication \u00ab\u00a0Maestoso\u00a0\u00bb, le rythme lent avec ses grandes dur\u00e9es donnent \u00e0 ce mouvement de la grandeur et de la majest\u00e9. Au d\u00e9but on entend une ample m\u00e9lodie russe chantante qui se change ensuite de fa\u00e7on constrast\u00e9e en un second th\u00e8me calme et distant qui rappelle un hymne eccl\u00e9sial.
