Partir de tableaux de Vermeer pour raconter la mondialisation au d\u00e9but du XVIIe si\u00e8cle, c\u2019est le pari de Timothy Brook<\/a>, un historien canadien dans un livre paru en fran\u00e7ais en 2015. Les lecteurs ont ador\u00e9<\/a>\u00a0: l\u2019auteur est un conteur formidable qui, \u00e0 travers toute une s\u00e9rie d’anecdotes, vous fait d\u00e9couvrir comment le monde a chang\u00e9 \u00e0 cette \u00e9poque. Au point qu\u2019Arte en a fait un documentaire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

L\u2019auteur observe que les tableaux de Vermeer sont r\u00e9v\u00e9lateurs d\u2019un quotidien marqu\u00e9 par la mondialisation du commerce. Dans la vue de Delft, Timothy Brook remarque les toitures rouges en haut \u00e0 gauche. Ce sont les toits des entrep\u00f4ts de la VOC (compagnie hollandaise des Indes orientales), dont l\u2019historien explique qu\u2019elle fut la plus puissante corporation commerciale du XVIIe si\u00e8cle.<\/p>\n\n\n

Chaque chapitre du livre se base sur un des tableaux du peintre de la jeune fille \u00e0 la perle.<\/a> <\/em>Celui qui donne son titre en livre s\u2019int\u00e9resse au chapeau de l\u2019officier et la jeune fille riant. <\/em>Un chapeau qui prend une place que l\u2019on peut trouver d\u00e9mesur\u00e9e dans la toile. On d\u00e9couvre en lisant que ce chapeau est en feutre et que seules les peaux de castor permettaient cette qualit\u00e9 de feutre. Tr\u00e8s vite on se retrouve avec Samuel de Champlain<\/a> se servant de son arquebuse dans une escarmouche entre tribus indiennes. Champlain remonte le Saint-Laurent en esp\u00e9rant trouver une voie maritime vers la Chine. Une Chine, objectif prioritaire de tout le commerce au long cours europ\u00e9en.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

La lecture du livre fait passer en permanence de ce qui semble une anecdote \u00e0 une autre, du chapeau au feutre, du feutre aux castors am\u00e9ricains, de ces derniers \u00e0 Champlain puis aux armes \u00e0 feu et au r\u00f4le des armuriers europ\u00e9ens, avant de revenir \u00e0 la Chine et aux r\u00eaves des commer\u00e7ants. Les passages sont tellement naturels, qu\u2019au moment o\u00f9 on s\u2019aper\u00e7oit qu\u2019on a chang\u00e9 d\u2019anecdote, on a d\u00e9j\u00e0 envie de savoir la suite de celle-ci. A la fin du chapitre, on d\u00e9couvre, au-del\u00e0 d\u2019anecdotes passionnantes et toujours racont\u00e9es avec pr\u00e9cision, que l\u2019auteur nous a fait comprendre un \u00e9l\u00e9ment essentiel de la mondialisation vers 1610.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On se met \u00e0 envier les \u00e9tudiants de Timothy Brook. Et on en redemande.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
