La narratrice est Suzanne Valadon, la m\u00e8re de Maurice Utrillo. L\u2019une et l\u2019autre furent des peintres reconnus et honor\u00e9s. Leurs vies ne furent pas un long fleuve tranquille. Et c\u2019est de leurs tourments (de leurs succ\u00e8s aussi) que le roman fait r\u00e9cit. Il est \u00e9crit comme une suite de monologues int\u00e9rieurs de Suzanne Valadon. Un portrait sensible, tr\u00e9buchant, haletant raconte une femme indomptable qui dit d\u2019elle-m\u00eame&nbsp;: \u00ab <em>De mon \u0153uvre il ne restera pas grand-chose. L\u2019unique et immense satisfaction qu\u2019elle me procure est de n\u2019avoir jamais trahi [\u2026] ce en quoi j\u2019ai cru.<\/em>&nbsp;\u00bb (p.113)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">La peinture et l\u2019amour<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Suzanne Valadon na\u00eet en 1865 \u00e0 Bessines-sur-Gartempe et meurt en 1938 \u00e0 Paris. Maurice Utrillo na\u00eet en 1883 \u00e0 Paris (sa m\u00e8re a donc 18 ans) et meurt en 1955 \u00e0 Dax. A sa naissance, son p\u00e8re n\u2019est pas d\u00e9fini (il s\u2019appellera Valadon dans sa prime enfance) et sa m\u00e8re a quelques raisons d\u2019h\u00e9siter. Blanchisseuse, elle devient mod\u00e8le pour des peintres et le premier qui la fait poser est Puvis de Chavanne, \u00e0 qui elle apportait son panier de linge. Peut-\u00eatre premi\u00e8re sc\u00e8ne d\u2019amour aussi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Elle connut (bibliquement parlant) une impressionnante s\u00e9rie d\u2019artistes, Erik Satie, Renoir ou Toulouse-Lautrec. Et Miquel Utrillo, un peintre catalan qui reconna\u00eetra son fils, alors \u00e2g\u00e9 de huit ans. Mais elle n\u2019est pas seulement amante. Mod\u00e8le, elle apprend lorsqu\u2019elle pose. Les peintres l\u2019inspirent, elle capte tous leurs gestes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ainsi Suzanne Valadon devient peintre en autodidacte, son fils aussi, encore que sa m\u00e8re le forme. D\u2019une certaine fa\u00e7on. Enfant elle le pousse, l\u2019oblige \u00e0 peindre (elle le harc\u00e8le dirait-on aujourd\u2019hui). Il ne veut rien entendre, refuse, s\u2019insurge, menace, puis, un jour, d\u00e9j\u00e0 adulte, un d\u00e9clic, il a compris les couleurs, sa main a l\u2019intelligence de la forme. Trois ans plus tard, il est c\u00e9l\u00e8bre. Il a d\u00e9j\u00e0 peint 300 toiles. Il vit de sa peinture dans sa vingtaine, il est encens\u00e9 dans sa trentaine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Un trio ind\u00e9finissable<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Le r\u00e9cit commence en 1935. Suzanne Valadon est hospitalis\u00e9e. Maurice Utrillo doit \u00e9pouser Lucie Valore. Il a 52 ans, mais le mariage d\u00e9sesp\u00e8re sa m\u00e8re. Elle le vit comme une trahison, comme un renoncement de son fils \u00e0 son propre talent, une prise de pouvoir de Lucie pour qui elle n\u2019a pas grande estime.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Le d\u00e9chirement que vit Suzanne Valadon en dit long sur le lien complexe qui l\u2019unit \u00e0 son fils. Mais sa douleur a alors une autre cause. Son mari, Andr\u00e9 \u00dctter, lui pr\u00e9f\u00e8re une jeune m\u00e9tisse. Et son mari n\u2019est pas n\u2019importe qui. C\u2019est un ami de son fils, il a son \u00e2ge, vingt-et-un ans de moins qu\u2019elle. C\u2019est Utrillo qui l\u2019a pr\u00e9sent\u00e9 \u00e0 sa m\u00e8re. Le coup de foudre a eu lieu. Partag\u00e9. Elle divorce de Paul Mousis, un homme qui l\u2019avait accept\u00e9e avec son fils.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Valadon et \u00dctter se marient. Ils ach\u00e8tent un petit ch\u00e2teau \u00e0 Saint-Bernard dans l\u2019Ain, une ruine qui restera ruine. Ils veulent \u00e9loigner Maurice Utrillo de la capitale, de ses caf\u00e9s et de ses habitudes. Et il y peint comme un fou\u00a0; il boit aussi comme un fou. L\u2019alcoolisme de Maurice Utrillo, c\u00e9l\u00e8bre s\u2019il en est, n\u2019est pas de fa\u00e7ade. En crise de manque, raconte Corinne Samama, il est dans des bouges o\u00f9 il se fait frapper, il se l\u00e8ve la nuit, hurle dans les rues. Il est intern\u00e9 plusieurs fois. A cette \u00e9poque, on soigne s\u00e9v\u00e8re, on n\u2019h\u00e9site pas sur les \u00e9lectrochocs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Le trio entretient des relations, que dire\u00a0?, peu ordinaires. Le roman laisse imaginer plut\u00f4t qu\u2019il ne d\u00e9taille. Comment aurait-il pu sans se livrer \u00e0 des affabulations. Mais on sent que la cr\u00e9ation ne se dissout pas toujours dans les difficult\u00e9s (ou les singularit\u00e9s) existentielles. Ici, c\u2019est le contraire. Utrillo peint, Suzanne aussi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Rigueur biographique<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Sans jamais professer, Corinne Samama glisse dans le roman des d\u00e9tails biographiques aux vertus explicatives. Suzanne Valadon, fille-m\u00e8re, est sur les bris\u00e9es de sa propre m\u00e8re, Madeleine. Et, enfant, elle se sentit \u00e0 la fois couverte de honte et habit\u00e9e d\u2019un instinct rebelle et effront\u00e9. Elle laisse Maurice \u00e0 sa m\u00e8re qui l\u2019\u00e9l\u00e8ve \u00ab&nbsp;comme \u00e0 la campagne&nbsp;\u00bb. Un petit coup de gnole dans le biberon et il dort bien quinze heures&nbsp;! \u00c7a donne des r\u00e9flexes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On apprend, toujours incidemment, que Utrillo re\u00e7oit la L\u00e9gion d\u2019honneur. La presse couvre le mariage avec Lucie Valore avec un titre perfide\u00a0:\u00a0\u00ab\u00a0<em>Le c\u00e9l\u00e8bre peintre Maurice Utrillo se lib\u00e8re d\u2019une m\u00e8re fantasque pour trouver le bonheur aupr\u00e8s d\u2019une riche veuve.<\/em>\u00a0\u00bb La relation fusionnelle entre Suzanne Valadon et son fils \u00e9merge quand il la menace avec un couteau puis fond en larmes avec elle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Un roman de vies si \u00e9tranges, si exceptionnelles. Et la m\u00e8re qui compose une sorte de honte et une force d\u2019\u00e2me, avec \u00e9voqu\u00e9s tour \u00e0 tour ses tableaux, ses amours, ses poses. Tout chez elle va ensemble, d\u2019une certaine fa\u00e7on tout l\u2019accuse, et pourtant le roman est port\u00e9 par une r\u00eaverie (un cauchemar&nbsp;?). Utrillo est plus lointain, il est vu de ses yeux \u00e0 elle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Une tension abyssale<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>En 1935, sur son lit d\u2019h\u00f4pital, l\u2019\u00e2ge d\u00e9fait le charme gr\u00e2ce auquel elle fit son chemin dans le monde. La maladie d\u00e9sole son corps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>C\u2019est un r\u00e9cit mont\u00e9 (b\u00e2ti) sur une  <em>je<\/em> r\u00e9invent\u00e9, mais au plus juste de la r\u00e9alit\u00e9. Le pass\u00e9 appara\u00eet par bribes. Les monologues de Suzanne Valadon fouillent dans sa vie, dans ses insurrections, ses remords. Le titre qu\u2019a choisi Corinne Samama ne doit pas \u00e9garer. Maurice Utrillo est son plus grand d\u00e9sastre, il est aussi sa plus grande fiert\u00e9.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Chacun comprendra \u00e0 sa mani\u00e8re la tension extr\u00eame entre un homme qui dit&nbsp;: \u00ab&nbsp;<em>ma m\u00e8re a toujours fait passer sa peinture avant moi. Pour autant elle reste mon artiste pr\u00e9f\u00e9r\u00e9e<\/em>&nbsp;\u00bb et une femme qui s\u2019est int\u00e9ress\u00e9e \u00e0 son fils \u00ab&nbsp;<em>quand il a commenc\u00e9 \u00e0 peindre<\/em>&nbsp;\u00bb.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Le r\u00e9cit sobre et sensible ne donne pas de cl\u00e9.
